Proverbs 3

Trusting God’s Wisdom

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
— Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

Proverbs 3 is a call to live in alignment with God’s wisdom, and verses 5-6 are some of the most cherished lines. At its heart, this passage speaks to our human tendency to rely on what we can see, feel, and understand—our own intuition, reasoning, and life experience. God knows this, yet He invites us to take a different approach: rather than leaning on what we know, He asks us to lean on Him.

When we trust God “with all our heart,” it means we don’t compartmentalize our faith. We bring every aspect of our life—our relationships, career choices, finances, struggles—under His guidance. It’s easy to think, “I’ll trust God with the big stuff, but I can handle the rest.” Yet here, Solomon is teaching us to surrender fully, trusting God not only in moments of crisis but in daily decisions and actions.

In submitting to God’s ways, we learn the beauty of obedience. Surrender isn’t about passivity; it’s an active choice to allow God’s Spirit to guide us. When we do, we align with His purpose and His timing, even when it’s hard to understand the path we’re on. He promises to “make our paths straight”—meaning that, as we trust and obey, He’ll remove obstacles, clear the confusion, and give us clarity, step by step.

What areas of life do you find it hardest to trust God with? Consider taking a moment to ask God for faith in those areas, reminding yourself that He sees what we cannot. As you learn to trust Him with all your heart, you may find that God’s path, though sometimes unexpected, brings peace, joy, and purpose you couldn’t achieve on your own.

Prayer
Lord, I want to trust You with my whole heart, even when I don’t fully understand Your ways. Help me to lean on Your wisdom, to surrender my desires, and to follow Your guidance. Thank You for straightening my path and making a way. Amen.
